Didn't expect Five Finger Death Punch to show up in a Christian devotional? Well, as much as I love choral music, I have to have something with a little beat to it to help me through a run. When I heard this song's lyrics, I realized it is a modern psalm. A pouring out of one's heart, an honest listing of one's deepest fears and anxieties, a call for help. If you are open to Her, God can reveal herself anywhere.
Listen to this modern psalm while following along with the lyrics, printed below. Then read an original psalm. Reflect on things in your life that are discouraging, that make you want to give up, that feel like the end of the world. Pray the prayer below that combines these two psalms. As you pray, try to envision how it applies to your own life. Carry this prayer with you so that you can remember when the very ground is moving beneath your feet you can be still for God is in the midst of the city and it shall not be moved.
Lyrics to a modern psalm
I've given up, On society, Up on my family, Up on your social disease
I've given up, On the industry, Up on democracy, Done with all your hypocrisy
All of the chaos And all of the lies
I hate it
I'm wasting here
Can anyone Wash it all away?
I'm waiting here
For anyone To wash it all away
Wash it all away!
I've given up On the media, Feeds my hysteria
Sick of living down on my knees
I've given up On morality, Feeds my brutality
Forget what you think about me
All of the chaos And all of the lies
I hate it
I'm wasting here
Can anyone Wash it all away?
I'm waiting here
For anyone To wash it all away
Wash it all away!
I won't change for you, And I can't take the pain
There's nothing you can do, And there's nothing you can say
I've given up on everything
Up on everything
Up on everything
I'm wasting here
Can anyone Wash it all away?
I'm waiting here
For anyone To wash it all away
Wash it all away
I'm wasting here with everyone
Just wash it all away
I'm waiting here for anyone
To wash it all away
Wash it all away
Wash it all away
Lyrics to an original psalm
Psalm 46 NSRVue
God’s Defense of His City and People. To the leader. Of the Korahites. According to Alamoth. A Song.
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.
6 The nations are in an uproar; the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice; the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
8 Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations; I am exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
Let us pray
Our Steadfast God, You were present at creation and You are present every time it has felt like the end of the world. You are our refuge from chaos and lies. You are our strength when we have given up on society and family. You are our ever-present help against hysteria disguised as information and brutality disguised as morality. Forgive us our wasting and our waiting, for you have already washed it all away with the river whose streams make glad the city of God. We will not fear, though the earth should change, though the nations uproar, though the kingdoms totter. You will make wars cease, you will break the bow and shatter the spear. Help us to be still and know that You are God. Amen.
